I made a Fair Isle hat with the wool leftover from my purple sweater project.

I used a gauge of 32 st & 32 rows makes four inches. I cast on 136 stitches, doing a seed stitch for four rows. Then I did plain knit for the remainder of the grey lining. Then I increased to 168 stitches with k4 m1. Then I did a bunch of rows...more than 47.

For the crown, I used a classic tam pattern. First, I decreased to 130 stitches & then did five 26 stitch wedges for the crown.

Next time I do this, I'll do the lining, then increase to the number of stitches for the main body, then do a couple rows of plain knitting in the main background color, then do a row of purl as a turning row. I ended up stitching the lining into the back of the hat. I can see the lump where it's sewn. Blocking will help but I don't think that's the answer. A purl row for turning would help the hat to naturally fold the 'right' way.
