Heart Illusion Baby Blanket
Yarn: Dale Baby Ull
Needles: Addi #3
This was a project that took MUCH longer than intended.
Part of the issue was my reluctance to start knitting until 3rd trimester. I've knit for two babies who died. Now I don't start until 3rd trimester.
Next was my reluctance to buy the wool mail order. When knitting for baby, it must be machine washable. I'm also averse to synthetics. This means I need machine-washable wool which led me to Dale. While I know I could have bought this mail order, especially given that color isn't all that critical, I still wanted to buy it in person. Since I was passing reasonably close to Webs in December, I waited to buy the yarn until December.
Then I attempted to work out the pattern. I found some instructions on-line and started on a prototype. This wasn't working. I kept trying and finally worked out that the instructions seemed to produce a mirror image of the intended pattern. This was my lesson to not trust hand-kniting instructions written by a machine-knitter.
The technique is actually very simple. I kept trying to reconcile my results with what appeared to be well-written instructions. Finally, I gave it up and wrote my own.
If you're going to try this, just remember to knit everything sideways. The pattern goes with four matched rows. The first two rows are in the foreground color with row 1 (right side) knit. Row 2 (wrong side) shows the pattern. Rows 3 & 4 are in the background color where row 3 is knit, row 4 is exactly opposite of row 3.
